What is a upright printer (concerning ink life) for occasional use?

One of my friends have a printer that she used every few months but it was other dry. It turned out that the printer used the ink to keep the nozzles from drying out. I necessitate a colour printer with a long ink natural life, even if the printer isn't being used. It also wishes to be low cost because I don't want to spend a pile of money on a printer that is not often used. Is this possible?

Is there a opening to extend the ink life? Such as removing the cartridges when not within use?
